Williston, FL—one of my favorite places to visit and a place I hope to one day call home. What draws me in the most is the incredible equine community. As a new business owner it may be difficult to know which subscriptions you need in order to stay ahead and manage your business well. Here are the subscriptions I swear by for my photography business that I highly recommend.

Adobe

Adobe has all the software you could possibly want for all of your creative needs but the two most popular pieces of photo editing software are Lightroom and Photoshop. Both Lightroom and Photoshop offer several advantages for photographers and photo enthusiasts that are overall easy to use. You can get away with using one or the other but I prefer to have both as each one has its advantages. Nowadays Lightroom offers useful tools such as object removal, but overall I find that Photoshop does a better job of smoothing skin, removing blemishes, and removing objects. I also use Photoshop for adding sunflares and editing the sky which is why I recommend purchasing both. Many photographers find that Photoshop allows for more creative freedom, whereas Lightroom is good for immediate results and important tools such as presets. The only con to Photoshop is that it’s much harder to use than Lightroom and can be somewhat of a challenge for those who are new to Photography. There are plenty of YouTube tutorials out there for Lightroom and Photoshop which I highly recommend checking out.

You can get a monthly subscription to both for a total of $19.99. It is well worth the money and an absolute must-have for post-production.

Squarespace

In the past I have used several different website hosts but Squarespace has been by far the best one I have used. For me this is a very important business tool. Your website is your biggest and best tool. Far more effective than social media and in my opinion gives you more leads than Facebook or Google ads, providing that you use the SEO and blog tools.

Using Squarespace for your business can offer several important benefits such as:

So there you have it. The list is short but sweet. This is all I use for now. You really don’t have to have all the subscriptions out there to run a successful photography business. Stick to the basics. Work with your budget but also understand that it’s 100% worth investing in your business.

My Opinion On Courthouse Weddings

When thinking about a wedding, a lot of people think about the big extravagant wedding ceremony and reception but I’m finding more and more lately that clients are opting for a more minimalistic and intimate ceremony, often taking place in a courthouse. I personally think courthouse weddings are charming and I understand the appeal. Not only are they budget-friendly, but for those who are slightly introverted or just don’t want to attract too much attention, they are a great choice.

My last two weddings have taken place in a courthouse. It’s a very quick and stress-free way of tying the knot. Many may wonder if they should even hire a wedding photographer to capture their big day. My answer to that question is ABSOLUTELY!
Just because you chose to have a small wedding doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t document it. In fact, it’s all the more reason to. Many photographers offer courthouse wedding photography at an affordable price (Myself including). Save on the wedding but definitely do the photoshoot! Capture the memories and have something to look back on for the rest of your life.

Typically during a courthouse wedding the couple tying the knot will arrive at the courthouse early enough to register. From there, the courthouse will take payment and at your scheduled time, the officiant will take you into a room where the ceremony takes place. The amount of guests allowed in the room will vary with each courthouse. I know Orange County Courthouse takes only six guests, whereas Osceola County can accommodate up to ten guests.

From there you can decide whether to do pictures inside the ceremony room or outside. I always advise having any post-ceremony photos taken outside. Ceremony rooms in a courthouse aren’t always the best for photos. Typically they are small and have unforgiving lighting. The photographer will capture your ceremony in the best way that they can, but it’s nice to have contrast so I always usher my clients and their guests outside after the ceremony where we can make use of the natural lighting and beautiful surroundings. My favorite courthouse to work at is Osceola County. The room is small but it’s pretty. White walls, floral decorations, super cute and again, minimalistic. Outside is beautiful with stunning oak trees and historical buildings which are perfect for photos.

I love large weddings, but I also really love courthouse weddings. They are intimate and affordable and leave room for other expenditures such as a meal, a reception, honeymoon, or just saving that money up! Whatever your decision may be, I fully support courthouse weddings. The intimacy alone is enough to win me over.

Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a newbie, it’s good to be prepared and set yourself up for a successful photoshoot. Let’s get into it.

1. Plan your outfits

When you book your Lifestyle shoot, your first thought should be “What am I going to wear?” Knowing what you have available is important. Be organized and prepare your outfits days ahead of your session. If you opt to purchase new clothes online, make sure you order them way ahead of your session just incase they don’t fit or don’t arrive on time.

2. Bring multiple options

Add some contrast to your photo collection by adding in multiple clothing options. During your session you will be prompted to change when your photographer feels it’s time.

I recommend the following:

• one dress option

• one business casual

• one casual

Three options are great, Four options are even better. A realtor may want to consistently dress smart throughout their session and just add in one causal outfit. If you’re working on your brand as a baker, you might want to dress more casual. If you’re a dancer, you may want to wear clothes that you would wear to dance in. You get where I’m going. It’s really up to you but having those options and adding contrast to your session is definitely important.

3. Share your inspiration

I always recommend that my clients visit Pinterest and search their specific type of lifestyle or branding shoot. That way they can find and share any inspiration, or share any ideas that they might already have. Communicating with your photographer about what you expect from your session is super important, that way they can present you with work that you love. It’s definitely a team effort and bouncing ideas off each other is always encouraged prior to any photoshoot.

4. Don’t forget the props

Props differ for each type of lifestyle or branding shoot but basically you want to show your target audience who you are and what you’re all about. If you’re a Realtor, bring props that pertain to being a Realtor (Laptops, phones, iPads, pens, paperwork). If you work in a bakery you could bring a few baking items, food items such as cupcakes, or an apron.

5. Bring your wallet

Adding a drink or some food to your photos is always a fun option. A lot of my clients opt to do a portion of their session inside a cafe or restaurant.

6. Expect to spend some time with your photographer

Lifestyle sessions are lengthy. They can range from 1-2 hours depending on what it is you’re trying to achieve. Expect to spend 2 hours with your photographer and don’t plan anything else immediately before or after your session.

7. Be well rested

Make sure to drink enough water and get plenty of sleep the week of your Lifestyle session. Having good energy and being in good spirits is extremely important for your photoshoots as it all translates on images.

8. Give your photographer time to edit

A lot goes in to editing lifestyle photoshoots from editing objects out, airbrushing, color correction, the list goes on. Give your photographer two weeks to complete their project. If you have a deadline, make sure to complete your photoshoot ahead of time so that you’re both not in panic mode.

9. Most importantly, HAVE FUN

At the end of the day, we want you to be happy. Have fun with this project. Laugh, smile, joke around, do goofy things and laugh with your photographer. Good energy translates on image so the more fun you’re having the more chance you’ll love your photos! This is your experience and we want you to have a good one.

Things Your Photographer Wants You To Know

Hi, I’m Laura and I’m a professional photographer based out of the Orlando area. I specialize in Family and Lifestyle Photography and today I am going to go over a few things that your photographer wants their clients to know. If your first thought is “uh-oh” don’t worry, I’m not one of those photographers that bashes their clients. I’m actually here to help you! Alright, let’s get into it.

#1 It’s okay if you’re nervous or feeling “awkward”

You know who else is nervous and awkward in front of the camera? Your photographer. That’s why we are behind it instead. We magically know how to pose our clients but when it comes to being in front of the camera can be pretty terrible and that’s what I tell all of my clients. You’re doing great and I promise you we are NEVER judging you at all in any way! We are too busy judging our own photography skills anyway.

#2 Your children are NOT a problem

As a Mom of a 6 year old Tasmanian Devil, I know the immense pressure that is forced upon me whenever she isn’t acting perfectly in public. But let’s face it, kids aren’t meant to be perfect, it’s just society that has made us to feel like we are a burden if our kids display any form of negative or expressive emotion. A good family photographer will have understanding and patience. If your photographer doesn’t have those skills then you’re working with the wrong one. During my sessions, I take photos of children in increments. I’ll snap a few shots of them then give them a little mental break. Let them play, have a snack, do whatever they need to do to stay happy. Let them run riot, I don’t care! I love kids. Candid photos are always the best anyway, so even if they are off playing or being silly, those are the memories you truly want to hold on to instead of that perfect family portrait. Just don’t worry about your babies, okay? They are never a burden.

#3 Its okay to ask for a re-edit

Some clients are too afraid to ask for changes to be made to their images in fear of upsetting their photographer but our main priority is to have a happy client. It’s absolutely okay to ask for a re-edit. If you don’t like how you look and want to be slimmed down, or airbrushed, or whatever, JUST ASK! That’s what Photoshop is for baby. If you don’t like the edit your photographer has used for your images, ask for a change. It’s okay! You paid for our services and it’s our job to provide you with photos that you can love and cherish forever so please don’t be afraid to speak up. I get it, it’s sorta like sending a dish back at a restaurant and asking them to remake it. You feel awful don’t you? But trust me, I’d rather have my ego slightly shattered than provide my clients with a product that they don’t like. Happy clients = Happy photography

#4 - It’s okay to haggle the price a little

Okay so this might be a controversial topic amongst photographers. Don’t get me wrong, my prices are my prices and that’s what I’m going to charge. I charge what I’m worth. I charge for my time, gas, and the hours and hours I put into editing. As you know, photoshoots can be expensive but in reality, photographers do not get paid enough for the time and effort we put into our work. BUT take yesterday for example; I was in a Facebook group and a woman explained that she really wants some photos of her kids but she cannot afford those high end prices and asked if anyone was willing to cut her a deal. I’m a mom, I know it costs a lot of money to take care of children and not everyone can afford to hire a photographer so I offered her a deal to help her out. I guess what I’m saying is, it’s okay to tell your photographer that you cannot afford their services. As my Dad used to tell me “If you don’t ask, you don’t get.”

When I expressed an interest in starting my own photography business I was told that it’s an over saturated market, therefore it’s difficult to become successful. I’m here to tell you that it’s totally doable. I have compiled a list of tips for new business owners or anyone who wants to build their own photography business.

#1 Figure out what you’re good at

Find your niche. Is it family photography? Is it weddings? Do you prefer to do real estate or boudoir? Whatever it is, figure out what gives you drive and stick to it. On the flip side of that, you don’t have to stick to one niche in order to run a successful business but it is important to make sure you are really good at one area and stick to it in the beginning. I specialize in family photography and lifestyle portraits but somehow I ended up doing headshots and real estate too. I advertise myself as a family and lifestyle photographer though because those are the things that I’m the best at.

#2 Don’t compare yourself to other artists

Even if you’re unaware of it, repeatedly watching other photographers online subconsciously makes you think that you’re not good enough because you’ll compare yourself to more seasoned photographers (Or at least, that’s what happened to me). Notice how I don’t say “better” photographers? You have to get it out of your head that you’re not as good as other photographers or I promise you, you’ve already killed your own dream. Art is subjective. Nobody is better than you. We all bring different sets of skills to the photography table. Sure, you want to be as successful and as skilled as these other photographers but in the end watching them on a daily basis will make you start to doubt yourself until you find excuses not to try. By all means use other artists as inspiration if that’s what gives you drive, but never compare yourself. Focus on your own journey and your own path and I promise you, you’ll succeed. When I stopped comparing myself, I started to book more clients and I became a better and more confident photographer. You don’t need the approval of other photographers. I promise you they aren’t sat judging your photos in a negative way.

#3 - Focus on your website, not social media

Your website is your biggest business tool other than word of mouth. Your website is far more valuable than social media ever will be. Social media is not where your money is. Don’t get confused with the creators who have a large following on social media and make pocket change off it. That probably isn’t their main source of income and that isn’t what you should be focusing on if you want to become a paid photographer. Many of these photographers who are famous on social media already had a photography career before social media, hence why they are so skilled. Likes don’t pay the bills. Work on your website, learn SEO. Make your website your baby. Put your heart and soul into it and I guarantee it will pay off.

Tip: Work on words over images. Google pics up words, not photos, so if you want your website to be seen on Google, put wording on every single one of your pages. I will create a new blog post soon with tips on how to set up your website.

#4 - Word of mouth is your best friend

Clients are more likely to book with you when they hear that other people have had a great experience with you. If you don’t have any past clients, don’t worry. Ask family members and friends to put in a good word for you. Give them an incentive if you feel like that’s something you want to do. I’m currently offering and incentive of $25 per booking to anyone who refers clients to me. Even if you don’t have a ton of friends, you’ll be surprised at how many people do want to see you succeed. I rely heavily on word of mouth.

#5 - Join Facebook groups

But you just told us not to rely on social media? That’s true. Don’t think that sitting on social media all day is going to pay out because it won’t, but you can go fishing for clients and it does prove to be successful. I do it every morning. Join mom groups, parent groups, yard sale groups, stuff like that. Post an ad once a week (Depending on the rules of the group) and take a scroll down the page once a day. You’ll be surprised at how many people ask for recommendations on photographers.

#6 - Ask your friends to model in order to build your portfolio

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You’d be surprised who jumps to model for you. Sell the idea that you’ll give them free social media content and watch what happens.

#7 - Work on your social skills

Photography is a game of socializing and if you lack those social skills, you’re going to have to work on them in order to run a successful business. You are going to have to learn good customer service skills and you are going to have to be the friendliest you’ve ever been no matter what mood you’re in pre-shoot, no matter what’s going on in your personal life that day. If you’ve ever been in front of the camera you’ll know how terrifying it can be. How vulnerable it makes you feel. Your job is to guide your clients and make them feel good about themselves. Your job is to create a positive experience for your clients. Remember, your business will rely heavily on word of mouth.

#8 - Push for success and believe in yourself

Photography can be a very inconsistent way of making a living, especially at the beginning. Your efforts won’t be immediately rewarded but don’t be discouraged. If you stick to it and refuse to give up, you will succeed. The universe will reward you for your hard work and once those first few bookings come in, you’ll get that drive to book more. My biggest piece of advice is to believe in yourself and believe that you deserve success. It really is a game of energy. When my energy is off, I don’t book as many clients. When my energy is good, I attract business. Hard work and positive energy will help you succeed.

Ocala Trip & My Love For Equine Photography

I recently took a trip up North to Ocala, FL. The overall cause of the trip was to take my horse Cassie to the Equine Medical Center of Ocala because unfortunately she became sick with Colic. She began to Colic on Thursday and by Friday evening after seeing no improvements, her Vet recommended that I take her to be monitored at the hospital due to unknown bleeding and well, because she’s an old horse and old horses don’t always come back from these type of things. The great news is that she is home and well now. The doctors at that facility were absolutely amazing! Always updating me, allowing me to visit her, and assuring me that they were doing everything to help! Wonderful people, wonderful facility.

You’re probably wondering what this has to do with Photography. Well, while visiting Ocala, I decided to pick up a photoshoot and also go for a few Photography adventures of my own after visiting hours at the hospital.

On the Saturday I decided to book a hotel and just stay up in Ocala. I live in Orlando and driving back and forth is just too much. I had my five year old with me and it would have been exhausting for her. After visiting Cassie I decided to go for a drive because I wanted to see horses and try and snap some photos. Ocala is the horse capital of the world. It’s also my favorite place in Florida. It’s home to many Thoroughbred and Warmblood farms. Thoroughbreds and Warmbloods are my favorite breeds of horse but unfortunately living in Orlando, we are stuck with Quarter Horses. Not that there is anything wrong with QH’s but they really aren’t my thing. So visiting Ocala is always extremely exciting for me. I love driving down all those country roads, admiring the beautiful scenery and the beautiful horses. I always think about how lucky I would feel to own a piece of land there. It’s literally just horse property after horse property. It’s an Equestrian’s dream.

I’m not going to lie, I had fallen slightly out of love with horses for a little while. After 20+ years being around them, I was kinda burnt out and just ready to move on. Photography is what I am post passionate about and I love my business so much, so I kinda just let working with horses go. I haven’t worked with horses for a while. I have my own horse but she is a retired pasture pet who I put all of my money into because she’s old. I am on self-care barn and juggling a needy horse along with three kids had become a bit much. I kept telling people that when my horse eventually passes away I am taking a big break from horses. Anyone who knows me knows that horses have been my life since I was like 5 years old.

After visiting Ocala, I can say that I do NOT want a break from horses and I have very much fallen back in love with them. I visited HITS Winter Circuit and went to meet some of the show horses over there who were just breathtakingly beautiful. I snapped some photos of them and I even went up to the competition rings and got some shots of the riders on their horses. I was just in heaven. I used to compete but I stopped a long time ago. I don’t really ride anymore either. I am by no means an Equestrian nowadays. I am a glorified stable-hand at best. I love the hands on work of the barn. I love the medical side to horses. I find it fascinating watching the vet and I know a ton of medical related facts about horses. I love all that, and I would like to get back into it one day and maybe own another horse business but right now I truly want to focus on Equine Photography. I love it. I am good at it (Definitely want to get better at it). It brings me happiness. Like I said before, I picked up some work during this visit. It was with a past client. I was lucky enough to do a Lifestyle shoot with the horses and it just brought me to my happy place. I left Ocala absolutely sure that I want that feeling to be a permanent on so I am going to make it my mission to travel around the state and pick up some more Equine Photoshoots.

How To Dress For Professional Headshots

Being a professional headshot photographer, I’m often asked by my clients “What should I wear?” That’s a great question because what you wear is actually very important. Your headshots will be featured on your website, online portfolio, business cards, social media, and so on. Your headshots are your client’s first impression of you. As humans we are mostly visual, so putting in that effort to make a good first impression is very important. Gathering an outfit together the night before a photoshoot can be a tedious job but it doesn’t have to be. Thats why I put together a simple guide on how to dress for professional headshots, to help you dress for success.

Style yourself according to your industry

What is your job title? Who are your clients? Where will your headshots be featured? Is there room for growth within your company? If you’re a Realtor you should keep your look professional. If you’re in the creative industry your look can be more relaxed but it should remain clean. The aim of your headshot to tell the viewer who you are and what you’re all about.

What would you wear in a meeting with your client?

If you were to meet your client face to face what would you wear? Keep that question in mind when choosing your outfit.

Solids are a solid idea.

Patterns, lines, and stripes can be very distracting in an image, especially in an outdoor setting. That is why I always recommend that my clients come to their headshot session wearing solid colors. Solid and bold looks demand attention and look really professional.

Black and white pops!!!

Black or white is my go-to recommendation for headshots, especially for Realtors. It’s professional yet commands attention. Simple, clean, and effective. You can never go wrong with black and white as it compliments everyone and stands out against busy backgrounds.

Neutrals are a yes!

Just like black and white options, neutrals look amazing on camera too and are always a fabulous choice. Smart, professional, and straight to the point.

Wear clothes that fit well and make you feel fabulous

If you’re uncomfortable, it’s going to show on your photos and we don’t want that for you. We want you looking and most importantly feeling your best so we can have a successful photoshoot. Wear clothes that fit your body nicely, and give you confidence. Confidence translates onto photos and that’s exactly what we want for you!

Bring options

Bringing a backup outfit is recommended for any type of photoshoot but especially a headshot session. If you don’t want to change, I recommend bringing a blazer, a smart jacket, or a nice cardigan. That way you can add in and take off as you go. This will add variety to your images and give you more options.

Be true to yourself

I know I’ve guided you away from bold colors but if you’re a person who likes to command attention with color, that’s totally okay and it can still work. At the end of the day this is your headshot. Whatever you choose to wear, being true to yourself is important. I would prefer to photograph a happy, confident person over someone who is wearing something that they don’t necessarily like or feel good in.

How To Prepare Your Child For Their Photoshoot

A children’s portrait session can sound like a tedious job, especially for parents who have to go through the entire process of getting them ready and to the shoot clean, on time, and in a good mood. I have created a quick list of things you can do to make sure your entire children’s photoshoot experience runs smoothly for you, your child, and your photographer.

#1 - Feed them first

Every parent knows that a fed kid is a happy kid. To avoid the hunger monster from appearing mid-shoot, make sure to feed them a good meal before you leave the house. Portrait sessions typically last about an hour so it will be a while before they get to eat again.

#2 - Clean up those boogers

We all know that toddlers can get super snotty noses. Snot does show up on images and although your photographer can edit it out, they’d prefer not to as it’s very time consuming. Remember to bring a pack of tissues or baby wipes to clean their face up before and during the photoshoot. Your photographer will really appreciate it.

#3 - Food bribes are totally okay

As a family photographer I have met many parents who bring candy or snacks to bribe their children during their photoshoot and I completely support it. In order to get a child (or an animal) to perform, smile, or do anything but look miserable, food is a great way to peak their interest. After all, posing in front of a camera for an hour isn't really their idea of fun, is it? You want your photos to say “My kid is happy” and sometimes in order to achieve that goal, you’ve gotta whip out the candy!

#4 - Request a mental break

Your photographer is there to capture amazing shots for you and will keep shooting until your hour is up. A good children’s photographer will offer breaks, but if they don’t, don’t be shy and ask for one. Kids need mental breaks. Give them five minutes to run around and blow off some steam. We would rather have happy kids than bored kids. It’s all about give and take with them.

#5- Introduce them to their photographer

Meeting a stranger and posing in front of them might be weird for your little one. It’s the photographer’s job to introduce themselves and make your children feel safe and comfortable but if that isn’t the case with your photographer, then it might be up to you to do it. This is a good tip for other photographers too.
